This collaborative exhibition features Finnish artist Anu Tuominen and watercolourist and textile designer Naomi Ito. The two artists first met in 1997, when Ito happened to visit Anu’s exhibition during her stay in Paris and was attracted to her work at first sight. After returning to Japan, she was aware of Anu’s work through a portfolio of her work in Japan.
Twenty years later, Anu visited Ito at her exhibition in Helsinki in 2017, and the two actually met. The following year, they presented a textile pattern redesigned by Anu as a double name for Ito’s textile POCHO, which has been a long-seller for over 20 years. Last year, 2023, a collaborative exhibition entitled Helmin\u00e4 (Finnish for “as Pearls”) was held at the Forssa Museum in Finland. Anu is an artist who works with materials gathered from chance encounters and seemingly useless objects with a delicate sensibility, and is renowned for her sense of humour and colour. Hence, there has never been any collaboration. However, guided by a strange connection and feeling with artists from distant foreign lands, Anu and Ito created a new works decades later. This year’s exhibition will feature Anu’s works and Ito’s new watercolours, in addition to the works exhibited at last year’s Finland exhibition. Anu Tuominen is a tireless collector who makes art out of natural found objects, flea market finds, and curios that come to her by chance. Any object is potentially an artwork. Tuominen is constantly collecting and storing materials that she transforms into art by combing through, organizing and classifying her vast store of ready-mades. In Tuominen’ s hands, mundane objects undergo a metamorphosis. She plays not only with commonplace objects but also with words and concepts. The titles of her works are laced with clever humour and playfulness.
Tuominen’s art is conceptual but never inaccessible.
Anu Tuominen (b. 1961 Lemi) lives and works in Helsinki. She graduated from the Department of Interior Architecture and Furniture Design at the Helsinki University of Art and Design UIAH in 1992 and earned a master’s degree in space and time arts from the Academy of Fine Arts in 1995. Tuominen is the 2003 winner of Finland’s most prestigious art prize, the Ars Fennica Award, and she won the M\u00e4ntt\u00e4 Art Festival Grand Prize in 1995.<\/span><\/p>

Naomi Ito delicately captures the essence of nature through her evocative brushstrokes. Her paintings, born from fragments of poetic inspiration found within the natural world, feature enchanting watercolor washes and calligraphic lines that exude a sense of tranquility. With meticulous attention to detail, Ito personally orchestrates the color coordination process, ensuring a harmonious fusion of hues that perfectly complement her silk printing.
The silk printing technique employed by skilled Japanese craftsmen to create her textiles involves layering the prints 10 to 18 times, culminating in a singular masterpiece. To further enrich the textile’s narrative, Ito accompanies each piece with carefully selected words and poetry, adding a touch of lyrical grace to the final creation.
The artistic resonance of “nani IRO Textile” transcends boundaries, captivating the hearts of art enthusiasts across more than 30 countries worldwide. Notably, the collaborative textile works with Anu Tuominen have garnered immense acclaim, with two notable collaborations released in 2018 and 2023.
