As Gallery Yamahon celebrates its 25th anniversary, our final exhibition of the year will be a showcase of mon Sakata. Toshiko Sakata, the designer behind mon Sakata, is the wife of Kazumi Sakata (1945\u20132022), who\u2014through his renowned antique shop \u201cKod\u014dgu Sakata\u201d\u2014established a new way of appreciating antiques. Together, they shared a life deeply intertwined with craft and making.
Kazumi Sakata advocated an approach of \u201csetting aside authority and titles, sensing objects with one\u2019s own eyes, and seeing them through one\u2019s own measure.\u201d This philosophy transcended craft and art, profoundly influencing the lifestyles and aesthetic sensibilities of many. Sharing this ethos, Toshiko Sakata captures the quiet beauty that lies within everyday life, expressing \u201can eye guided by a gentle sensibility\u201d through fabric and thread. This exhibition will present works emblematic of the world of mon Sakata: one-of-a-kind garments with patchwork reminiscent of well-loved clothing, alongside long-admired staples such as knits and shirts. These garments, which quietly accompany daily life and grow richer with time, act like mirrors reflecting the sensibilities of the wearer. As we mark this 25-year milestone, we hope the exhibition offers an opportunity to reflect on the perspectives Gallery Yamahon has cherished\u2014\u201can eye for objects\u201d and \u201cthe beauty found in daily life\u201d\u2014together with the Sakatas\u2019 philosophy.
